From Milan to Varese
Day 1
Milan, Italy
This is a one day trip from Milan to Varese and Sacro Monte of Varese, in Italy.
Varese, Italy
I took the train from Milan central station to Varese, north of Milan. It's a city somehow overlooked by tourists, but it's beautiful and worth going.
Palazzo Biumi, Italy
Varese’s pedestrian city center is quite pretty, with lively squares and streets and nice cafes. Broletto, in the city center, is a lovely old courtyard that used to host the local market, now it's filled with little shops and cafes.
Corso Giacomo Matteotti, Italy
Corso Giacomo Matteotti is the main street of Varese. If you walk on it, you'll run into many top sights in the city.
Piazza San Giuseppe, Italy
Baptistery of San Giuseppe is the most ancient monument in Varese, dating back to 12th century. It has some of the amazing frescoes. The only thing is that it's not open every day, you have to check before going!
Villa Panza, Italy
Varese is most know for its beautiful villas. One of these is Villa Panza, standing on top of a hill.
Varese, Italy
But not only villas are beutiful in Varese, the parks as well. There are plenty parks and gardens in the city which give the place a very pleasant look. One of the most beautiful ones is Palazzo Estense Gardens.
Palazzo Estense, Italy
And the beautiful palace Palazzo Estente is actually a marvel of the city. It was described by an Italian poet as Milan’s little Versailles. Today it houses the local town hall.
Sacro Monte di Varese (Unesco site), Italy
Near Varese, there's one of the nine sacred mountains in Lombardy region, Sacro Monte di Varese, which is a UNESCO heritage. It lies in Campo dei Fiori National Park and it's a site where peole do hiking or just follow the cobbled paths from chapel to chapel. It's a beautiful mountain retreat.
